SMALL SCALE FARMING
Organic Farming for Food Security and Livelihoods
“Planting Seeds of Food Security and Hope”
SMALL SCALE FARMING
Kolping South Africa offers a five‑day organic farming training programme for small‑scale farmers.
The programme is currently implemented in rural and township communities across the Eastern Cape, specifically within the Mthatha and Queenstown regions.
At present, approximately 400 farmers from 25 farming families are participating in the initiative
Following the training, farmers grow food in their own household gardens to support their families, with surplus produce sold to generate additional income.
This programme is significant to rural households, as it enables access to sufficient, nutritious food at a low cost by eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides. By supporting both household consumption and income generation, the programme plays a meaningful role in poverty alleviation and sustainable livelihoods.
Through membership with Kolping South Africa, small‑scale farmers become part of a sustainable, supportive network that promotes continued learning and growth.

Nophelo Ndobeni from Gaduka Kolping Group
“I am Nophelo Ndobeni from Gaduka Kolping Group also know as a Kolping family. Kolping has given me a skill that is forever, gave me a way of survival that is a healthy lifestyle. I am now an independent woman who has a problem with my leg that was even operated, but works hard in her garden despite of it, because that is where she gets healing. My doctor required me to eat healthy vegetables and therefore I produce them by myself walking with my walking stick. Kolping is my support system in my journey of success. My family and I never slept without food instead I am making money by selling to the community school, community and hawkers in town.
Nontuthuzelo Nkuntse from Ntlazi Kolping Group
I am Nontuthuzelo Nkuntse from Ntlazi Kolping family. I have been a Kolping member since 2022 and will never leave Kolping. Kolping took care of me when I had nothing and made me a whole woman again because I was trained on organic farming and now, I am leaving in my garden with my family. Organic farming is my lifestyle, and I am always motivated because I have mentors that visit, so I want my garden to always look good. I sell my crops to be able to pay my pledges at church, and provide for my children.
